Ahhh, the great smell of new tech…

Posted in Home at 11:13 pm by guy_simmons

…but first, I managed to wrangle an invite to this last night:

image004.jpg

Will is a great speaker, very intelligent, articulate & amusing, & the basis of his talk tapped into something that has been key in my thinking over the past year or so, namely using games as a way to educate children. What I’ve been thinking about is ways of teaching them how to think through the experience of play, obviously that’s what kids do anyway, but I’m keen to focus on core aspects such as letters & numbers, but ultimately leading on to higher concepts like maths & physics. Will’s talk last night has given me a bit of nudge, inspired me & made me think that some of the ideas I have may have legs. Oh, & he talked about Memes too 😀

Afterward we headed back to the bar for a few beers, & Cathy Campos & I started some serious reminiscing about the MuckyFoot xmas parties, which turned into a general slagging of all & sundry in the industry, which was funny. Timothy Spall was sitting over in one corner of the bar, looking red faced, drunk & angry. One of the blokes I was with tried staring him out for a bit but failed miserably. Barry Taylor holds a mean stare.

More lardy breakfast

Posted in Home at 1:09 pm by guy_simmons

Slightly more upmarket version here.

Barn raised chicken eggs, large (medium might be the optimum size actually), sesame bloomer, but still blue label bacon.  Roll on the weekend where I’ll get me some english muffins & some of that lavverly tesco hickory smoked “finest” bacon :)

The new Mac lappy shipped yesterday, with an estimated delivery date of 31st Aug, which was awesome considering the delivery estimate when I bought it was 5th Sept :) Just checked this morning, & it’s now in Shanghai, with a revised delivery date of 30th August!!!

Come to me my beauty, come to me. 😀

Wasps!

Posted in Home at 12:04 pm by guy_simmons

They’re getting bigger, I swear, & more in your face too, what with their coming in your house & feeding off the tops of all your orange squash bottles.

Buggering things.

Worst of all is that Kal got stung today, for no reason. He called me at work (Dom dialled) & proceeded to tell me how he wasn’t nasty to the wasp, but it stung him anyway, & that it really really hurted(sic), which made me feel like a right cunt as I’d rescued a wasp from the lounge earlier in the week, explaining to him that we should be kind to creatures, & that as long as you aren’t nasty to wasps they wont do anything to hurt you!

I can feel an infant complex growing already.

Superman Returns

Posted in Home at 11:45 am by guy_simmons

I saw it last night, & really enjoyed it up to a point (which I’ll come to in a moment), but I really found myself missing Christopher Reeve’s Clark Kent. Reeve’s Kent was always front & centre during his scenes, which he played beautifully. Routh on the other hand didn’t have a great deal of dialogue or presence as Kent, & in most of his scenes seemed to be in the background, while others delivered exposition & what not in the foreground. Minor gripe I know, but those scenes just felt really weak to me. But anyway, where it fell flat for me (*spoilers coming*) was the whole crystal island laced with Krytonite thing. When Superman landed on it & lost his powers, that was cool, & Lex Luthor kicking the crap out of him was cool too. Obviously he was going to survive, he’s Superman after all, so I got all excited trying to think about how the writers were going to get him out of this & what was going to happen next. Their solution was what killed the film for me, basically he just flies underneath the island, picks it up & flies it into space, despite the fact that great chunks of Kryptonite are growing around him & digging into his hands (the barest vein of the green stuff running under his feet had rendered him powerless 5 minutes earlier). I mean whafuck? Was this Jon Peters pulling rank on Bryan Singer I wonder? Or Singer just writing himself into a corner? After that it all just seemed to get a bit silly (thank fuck Superman didn’t come back to life when Lois Lane kissed him, but then how did he come back to life btw?).

So yeah, overall it was okay. I thought the effects were really good, Superman doing really cool Superman things (& I loved the flapping cape, both the way it looked (apparently a couple of puppeteers were involved in flapping that around constantly) & the way it sounded), & the music was lovely too (it was definitely built around the original John Williams score throughout, despite people saying it was *just* the title music). It was just the last 20 minutes or so that sucked, shame that.
